You want to find Japanese PS3 games that are fun and appropriate for your level of Japanese knowledge and your skill as a gamer.

Did you know that you don't necessarily need to know Japanese to play Japanese PS3 games on your PS3? When you put a Japanese PS3 game into an American PS3 you'll see the menus associated with it appear in Japanese. You may see the title of the game appear in Japanese and it may ask you when you first put the game in if you'd like to create system save data for the game. However, if you think about all the American PS3 game you own, they do the same things. If you can imagine what the game might be asking you if it were it in English you can usually figure out if it's prompting you to create saved data or choose the device you'd like to save to etc.. A little trial and error is all that's required.

Once you start playing the game, you'll notice that some Japanese PS3 games include menus that are in English or sometimes both Japanese and English. This can make it very easy to understand and navigate some or most of the menus in a Japanese PS3 game.

The dialog and game-play menus are more often in Japanese only. If the game is action oriented like a 3D action game, a shooter, or a vs. fighter, typically you can enjoy the game despite the language barrier. Other games may be trickier. Adventure games that rely on a lot of dialog may be pretty hard to enjoy fully without any knowledge of Japanese. RPGs can also be challenging to play. However, if you know enough Japanese to get by, you can usually get a lot of enjoyment out of a game regardless of whether you understand the story or not. It helps if you're already familiar with the style of game play from other games and enjoy that kind of game regardless of the story.
